Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its markings give off an otherworldly light.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Cupid's permanent state as a hatchling was the result of an unfortunate mishap; whilst the Cave Mother was practising a spell. little Cupid and several other hatchlings chose that moment to go running through her quarters in a race. Unfortunately, one hatchling tripped up the Cave Mother in the middle of her spell, causing it to hit the little Celestial who was lagging behind the others. While it seemed at first that nothing had happened, it quickly became apparent once her nestmates began to mature and she didn't.

Despite this, Cupid is actually quite content to spend her life as a hatchling, pursuing a duty as a playmate for any hatchlings that feel left out or alone, just as she had been as a hatchling.

There is, of course, another benefit to this permanent form, namely that she is one of the few dragons allowed to reside with the Cave Mother, and enjoys raiding the sweet treats whenever she has the chance, much to the Cave Mother's annoyance.
