And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.
This dragon has always been fond of humans, and humans have always been fond of him -- perhaps because of his uses as a stun gun. The local captain of the guard keeps him happy and tame with food, and in return the tiny hatchling delivers high-voltage shocks to any criminals that decide to put up a fight, stunning them on the spot. He can often be seen perched on guards' shoulders, chirping happily and causing their hair to frizz up with his static.
