Royal Blue dragons are a nocturnal breed who prefer to live high in the mountains near slow-moving water that reflects the night sky. Although quite capable of defending themselves, they are peaceful by nature and will avoid a fight whenever possible.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Izar the Magnificent, or simply Izar, is a Royal Blue dragon who is the current leader of his clan. He is the smartest dragon in the clan, as he knows how to read and can even write, and helps Cloudy and Sapphiro teach the hatchlings how to do so. He goes outside at night and works on his map of the constellations that he's had since he was a hatchling. Because of his intelligence, the rest of the clan gave him his title, "the Magnificent". He is calm and relaxed, and lets the tougher dragons do all the fighting. He has no problem with humans. Every morning, he goes to the Abandoned Cave, where he will find abandoned eggs and hatchlings to take back to his clan, sometimes even having to fight other predatory dragons to keep them safe. He lives in the library in the cave with Sapphiro, his best friend. He wouldn't have time for a mate between teaching the hatchlings and reading the library's books, which he took from an abandoned library in Drakeville.
