Magi Dragons are, as their name suggests, primarily magic users. They rarely use physical forms of attack. They eat anything they can kill, which is almost everything. They won’t kill unprovoked except when hunting, although they may kill humans if in danger. Their strong magic makes them one of the most feared breeds of dragons.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Elciar's main defining traits are his practicality, level-headedness, and reliability—so much so that his father's weyr has nicknamed him "He Who Gets Things Done."  Since he rarely loses his temper, he's very popular among the people of Dragontown, who view him as a safe source of help and advice.  Elciar can be annoyingly reasonable and even-tempered at times, and Nora Goldenmage often finds herself trying drastic measures to provoke a response out of him.

Elciar is also known for his extremely methodical approach to a problem.  When he decided he wanted to open a magic shop, he first spent decades traveling to learn different styles of magic, and then further decades visiting other magic shops to see what they sold and how they were set up.  Elciar then returned to Dragontown to set up his shop.  His main assistant is the frozen hatchling Amber Magelet, who has made it her mission to provoke Elciar into doing something irrational, though she's had no luck so far.
