This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Aramastus is a rather cruel dragon, but he has all the reason to be. From the start Aramastus never had a normal life. When he was only an egg, his sick mother was killed by a blood-hungry pack of vampire dragons. With only a few days left to hatch, a human found the egg and took it back with him to his village. Though Aramastus was sad, he was also glad to be claimed. On the egg's last day to hatch, the human injected vampire venom into his shell. The experimenter planned on making a neglected vampire dragon but the experiment backfired terribly. In a rage, Aramastus hatched himself and killed the man, for he still had much time left to do so. He then immediately fled. For part of his life he lived in the wild, killing many innocent dragons (many of whom were adults) for food. Later another human found Aramastus. He was fierce, yet she managed to freeze him. Though he has killed a hatchling or two, his attitude has gotten much better thanks to his new mother, The Blood Moon.
