Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Umiyuri Loss, along with her many similarly named siblings, occupy a small, quaint area of deep forest. Her parents, most notably her father, leave many of their younger siblings at the edge of the forest, presumably to fend for themselves or die. She seeks out these young kin to raise as she herself is incapable of having any more of her own eggs, and with her older siblings they live peaceful lives in the shadow of their shared father or mother.
