Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Daerkliss lives in the Dusk Divide Dragon Keep where she is known, along with her brother and sister, as one of the self-christened Black Thunder Trio. Her parents were a black and a thunder, both born in the caves of the wild and not the Keep, which the Black Thunder Trio takes pride in. The three siblings are rarely ever seen apart, and they eat, sleep, and fight together.

Daerkliss is the youngest of the Trio. She has enormous pride like her brother and feels she is a "hero" among dragons, to the point where she takes it upon herself to try and bring help to every dragon in the Keep. This annoys the dragons she tries to help greatly, but she doesn't see this. Daerkliss is also uptight and conceals her feelings extremely well. Due to this, she is known as the superego of the Trio, speaking as the voice of morality for her siblings. She has hesitantly accepted Gamelion Lollysweet the sweetling as a permanent mate, and dotes over him when she's not busy bringing justice to the Keep.
