Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Unlike the other hatchlings, this one hatched with wings.

And look! Its back legs have become a second set of wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Blue Robin came to his tamer as a very sick Skywing dragon. His wings were tattered and nearly useless from an altercation with a wild dragon, his breathing was shallow and uneven (later found to be a problem with his lungs), and his eyes appeared dull, as though he was on his last 'legs,' so to speak. His tamer made the decision to freeze him as a hatchling so that he would not develop complications as an adult. He can't really fly, but the adult Skywings are more than happy to let him ride on their backs.
