Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Shadowdrac is a Black who was "cave-caught" as his owner calls it. When he asked what this meant, he was told that it meant that his egg was stolen from the wild instead of bred in captivity. He enjoys the fact that this makes him treated well, though for a long time he couldn't settle with a suitable mate- in other words, one who matched his heritage. He finally did when one of Kiryu's acquaintances gave him a young, female Black hatchling, who was promptly named Akumalice. The two got on well right away, and when Akumalice matured, Shadowdrac took her as his mate. He has no aspirations to reach the status of dragons like Kuthian or Pyrros, however.
