Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Dreaming-Neon-Black is younger than Stands-in-Twilight and Taste-of-Night. He challenged Utkena for leadership only once, just after becoming an adult himself, and ended up losing his right eye for his troubles. A long slashing scar down his left flank commemorates the final blow dealt by a red dragon slain by Dreaming-Neon-Black for violating the pack's territory and carelessly setting fire to part of their forest. Dreaming-Neon-Black is something of a runt for a black dragon, and leans heavily on his mystical talents to compensate for his lack of physical prowess. He looks up to Utkena fanatically due to her skills in blending martial magic with physical combat; her losing the leadership challenge to Rises-Upward-From-Shadow was a serious upset to him. He remains loyal to her, and resents the night dragon deeply for upsetting "the way of things".
