And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

The youngest of Luolon Long and Spirit Giver children. Since he first hatched, Cranbertwist always seemed smaller than most dragon hatchlings, but it was not until his wings began growing in that his parents saw reason to be worried. Cranbertwist's left wing was deformed from the very start, preventing the little dragon from learning how to fly. Despite the best efforts of the skilled healer, Ivory Starlight, nothing could be done to help Cranbertwist become airborne. At first, Luolon Long and Spirit Giver held great concern over what kind of life their small son would have, considering he would never be able to fly like the rest of the herd's hatchlings, and worried that he would feel left out while playing with them. But to their relief, Cranbertwist never showed any indication that he felt cheated due to his disability, even going so far as to point out that lots of dragons, such as Mystic Lyric and Terra Scythe, were naturally flightless and still managed to get by just fine.
