Canopy Dragons love to soar above the tropical jungles and other densely forested areas. Their billowing, layered wings create generous lift that allows them to ascend effortlessly over the warm jungle. While their unique wings do not make them the fastest flyers, they are champion gliders. To further this end, dexterity, maneuverability, and grace are all judged by the females when selecting their mates from the males that can accurately complete the exhausting and elaborate courtship dance between the close growing branches of the upper canopy.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Once in a while, a certain canopy dragon will try to make a name for itself in the horde. Most of them fail, but Oaken Spear was one of the few who succeeded. By the horde custom, she should have been named "Clumsy Tramp," but Leaf Spirit and Rain Foot, the female leaders of the horde, offered her an alternative. As a hatchling, Oaken Spear was to hunt down a malicious vampire dragon that occupied the western front of their territory, a job usually reserved for more experienced fighters, such as Sprout Fang or Kapok Arrow. The fight was brutal. Oaken Spear was lucky enough to escape without getting bit, but her wings had been mauled by the vampire's sharp claws, and was no longer able to fly.

Unlike her parents, Oaken Spear is rather polite and reserved, and prefers quiet mornings reading scriptures up in the trees with Tobias Eaton Prior to playing pranks. Once in a while, you might find her hiding beetles in Palm Tail's nest, but other than that, she is quite well-mannered.
