Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Viper Tooth is a rambunctious dragon hatchling who greatly idolizes his father, Crimson Firedrake, and is always trying to live up to the former lone dragon's strength. Sometimes, Viper Tooth's desire to be as strong as his father often gets him into trouble, for he sometimes takes on a challenge too great for a hatchling to face. When this happens, he usually has to be saved by the hatchlings' caretaker, Luolon Long, or, if the situation is dire enough, by his own father.
