Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has a somber color, but is surprisingly playful.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Onyx is too small to hunt things much larger than mice or voles, but she is exceptionally good at it. Her flight is a bit shaky, as her wing bones are rather weak due to a lack of calcium in her diet. Her tamer has been trying to introduce more calcium into the young one's daily feeding ritual, and the White dragons of the cave are able to use their magic to slightly strengthen her bones, but they can only do so much.
