Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

User Description

Once upon a time there was a Dragon Cave Newb who was wonderfully excited to be finally entering this dragon filled world. Eventually her first egg, a purple dorsal dragon, hatched. Being horribly excited and woefully ignorant as she was, she did not know that a dragons' sex could not be determined until their wings grew in and she hurriedly named the dragon, images of a majestic male dragon already filling her minds' eye. The next day she arose to find that her precious dorsal dragon had grown wings. Before the elation could reach it's peak it swiftly died- after all, it had turned out that Aaron Mar was a female dragon.

Aaron is understanding, though, and doesn't hold the unfortunate naming against her caretaker. Instead she uses it as an opportunity to warn newcomers and older caretakers alike to wait until they are awake, alert and that the dragon has grown wings before naming a hatchling. Better safe than sorry, after all.

And better careful than misnamed.
