This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

While it seems many vampire dragons are becoming kind, soft and lovable recently, Avalatha finds this sickening. She can only be compared to a demon in terms of nastiness; she never does anything kind unless it benefits her, and is known to slaughter and eat alive anyone that is unlucky enough to cross her path at night. But this is not unnatural for her, as she is the grandchild of the Native American vampire, Jumlin. Being so cruel, Avalatha is often chased off if seen by a member of the nearby clan, and she normally goes without resistance -unless you count a hiss resistance-. Avalatha is the type to bear grudges, so it's highly recommended to try and avoid her, because apparently, she only has a bad side.
