Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Lightshine was barely hatched when Kako cast a powerful spell over her to prevent her from aging. She will always wonder why her owner did this, why she kept her small and weak rather than allowing her to grow big and strong like the rest of her Clan. But she does not complain, for life as a hatchling is very good to her. She stays with her foster parents, Blue Blaze and Carnation. She swims all around the lake with Blue Blaze while Carnation lies on the sand or cools herself in the shallows. Her foster brother, Pale, sometimes messes with her, but she loves him all the same.
