Caligene Dragons have long been considered omens of death—reinforced by the skeletal markings on their bodies. They exert a malignant force on the world around them, causing other living things to slowly waste away in their presence. Caligenes favor the seasons of summer and autumn, disappearing entirely from the forests they inhabit during winter and spring. These malevolent dragons are physically weak, though this is countered by their natural stealthiness and alarming speed—enabling them to close in on large targets quickly and silently to create ambushes from which prey cannot escape.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Of the Alpha Males of the Revenga tribe-pack, Amanita is one of the most powerful and respected by his kin. A soft-spoken individual with an intellectual bent, he doesn't stand out as a hardened warrior the way Sandstorm does, but no one who knows his reputation would dare cross him. He keeps his den inside an old, hollow giant cypress, one of many found in Revenga territory. He climbs up the outside of the trunk and drops into a hole in the crown to get to his home space. Amanita is the foremost expert on herbalism and poisons among the Revenga. His hoard consists mostly of rare substances needed for both healing and harming—everything from bundles of herbs hung to dry to crystal vials holding samples of unusual minerals. Many things are stored in rough niches in the walls of his den. Others are suspended and hanging, or even buried in the soft earth at the very bottom of the hollow. No one can tell that his tree is a dragon's lair at a casual glance; those who get nosy regret it.
