Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Jocasta likes to hunt at night due to her sensitivity to the sun. The signature barn owl cry of her kind has not fully developed, and it is more of a hoarse roar at the moment. It is enough to instill fear within her prey. It even terrifies other hatchlings, though she is as gentle as a lamb and would never hurt another dragon unless they caused her physical harm.
