Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Little Fondue's egg was found in a harsh environment for cheese—near an active volcano! But as Steinwand seems to have grown up to be just fine, some believe him to be made of some of the toughest cheese around. The only "gooey" or "sticky" part of him is his personality, as he is quite an emotionally clingy little dragon. But it also means he shows admirable loyalty to his friends.
