Nocturne Dragons are a strange breed. Whenever light strikes their bodies, they are frozen in whatever position they were in. This leaves them vulnerable and they rely on camouflage to keep themselves safe. They are often mistaken for statues when in this frozen state, but Nocturne dragons do not actually turn into stone. Rather, they merely idle until the sun goes down. At night, these dragons come to life, proving themselves to be powerful fliers, although little else is known about their true behavior.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Nocturnah was hatched in the lightless confines of a castle dungeon, smuggled in by an outside source as a means of helping a prisoner escape. As a hatchling, she was kept hidden beneath the bed for the first several months, but after her wings developed, it became too difficult to wiggle into the small space. She managed to remain hidden by curling into a tight ball and allowing blankets to be thrown over her, making her look like a mere pile of fabric. When she got too big for the blankets to cover her completely, the prisoner decided it was time to escape. A few powerful swipes at the door was enough to blow it off its hinges, and the chase was on. Nocturnah and the prisoner made it to the castle entrance unhindered, merely bowling over any guards who stood in their way. Another swipe at the entrance door blew it off its hinges, and in that moment Nocturnah froze. It was daylight outside. The prisoner ran ahead, leaving his partner to whatever fate the guards had in store for her.
