This is a baby chick, not a dragon. So what was it doing in the dragons’ cave?

In the Valley of Teeth, no creature radiates as much awesomeness as this young chick. When THE AWESOME GILBIRD first hatched, he emitted a Prussian blue glow, a sign of potentially deadly levels of awesome. As a result, Gilbird often felt light-headed and feverish. His mysterious illness worsened as he grew; one day, he was immobilized with the alarming sensation he was about to explode from too much awesome. Fortunately, The Awesome Gillian Beilschmidt traced the radiation to Gilbird's location, and performed a spell to amplify his awesomeness containment capability, saving his life.

From that day forward, Gilbird has served as Gillian's faithful partner-in-crime. He plays an integral role in her one-bird surveillance group; from innocent pranks to full-scale invasions, she relies on his scouting missions to help her plan strategies. He's also popular with her many children, though he doesn't appreciate their occasional "chicken dinner" jokes.
