Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Thric Ultro was frozen by the request of his parents, who found that their son was unable to speak. They had hoped that the freezing would enable him to speak, but it only made the situation worse- Thric Ultro stopped making sound whatsoever! His pawsteps are silent, his breathing is silent, and even the usual noise made by a dragon tunneling through the dirt is silenced. This magical effect was quickly discovered by other dragons, who told others. Soon, word had spread and fighter dragons started coming around, wanting to use Thric Ultro in the war as a spy. Fearing that their son would be used as an instrument of war, Thric Ultro's parents took him to the only place that they knew of that other dragons would not go—to the vampire dragons.
