And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Sal didn't want to be frozen. He wanted to grow up, to help out around the Cave, to fly freely, without boundaries. He wanted to help hunt, and raise hatchlings. But now, that will never happen. He was forced into being frozen, and is now a permanent hatchling. No matter what he does, that will never change.

However, ever since Alzarath was forced into the same situation, he found himself viewing his in a new light. At least he didn't go through the same pain; at least the dragons had thought to warn him before he was frozen. He got a chance to grow a little, rather than being frozen the moment he was able to be—unlike the albino, who was stuck in his wingless phase. That in mind, and feeling some brand of sympathy, Sal began hanging out with the Albino. It was rough going, at first, due to some serious trust issues that Alzarath has, but they're now inseparable, to the point of both being immensely protective and possessive of the other. It's worrying, but no one says a thing.
