And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Principe is a prince among hatchlings, though somewhat of a brat. Skilled at flight despite his incomplete development, he takes pleasure in awing the other frozen hatchlings—many whom cannot fly—with his acrobatics. He earns his title by helping still-growing hatchlings learn their wings, and when his pupils mature into adults they remember him still. As a result, Principe has the good favor of many a full-grown dragon several times his size. He uses his connections to spoil himself, occasionally thinking to request something that benefits his fellow frozen hatchlings.
