Avin Pygmies are known for being both numerous and highly adaptable. These omnivorous and opportunistic pygmies have been found in every habitat and usually live in large colonies. They can typically be heard before they’re seen; humans and dragons alike generally consider Avin Pygmies a nuisance because of their loud, screechy calls. With few defenses, Avin Pygmies will simply take flight and try to escape in any direction as fast as they can when threatened.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Pygmy dragons are the smallest category of dragons, being on the same scale as domesticated animals. They are often found around concentrated populations of dragons, relying on their larger brethren to ward away potential predators and leave scraps. As such, the majority of a pygmy’s diet is scavenged. Due to their tiny size, pygmies do not breed with larger varieties of dragons.

Hertz is the kind of loud social butterfly most think of when they hear about Avins. Hertz is energetic, positive, and always rambling on and on about something. He has a love for adventure and exploration, as well as some hoarding tendencies. Hertz loves collecting strange rocks, flowers, feathers, and just about anything else he can get his talons on. He has a notorious habit of diving straight into danger without any sense of caution. Somehow, though, he always manages to escape the situations he gets into, since his flying skills are unreal. Even his grandmother, Stone, an infamous acrobat among her fellow Nilia, is impressed with his abilities. Hertz is an incredibly friendly dragon who has no issues approaching and chatting with complete strangers. Of course, these strangers usually end up avoiding him like the plague since he can be so obnoxious. Hertz never seems to mind this though, or maybe not even notice. Anyone he makes a connection with he will loyally follow around.
