Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Aellon had an unfortunate run-in with a gray dragon when he was very young, and since has despised them. He's quiet most of the time, brooding over how the world isn't fair and plotting his elaborate revenge on all weather dragons. Most of the older dragons think he's darling and innocent, but he's known to the hatchlings as an odd fellow and generally avoided.
