Speckle-Throated Dragons are an active, playful breed. They are easily excited and rarely remain still, spending much of their time in the air. Living in groups of up to sixty dragons, they nest in open plains and at the bases of mountains. Their speckled throats are their most distinctive feature, as well as the loud, echoing call they produce to communicate with one another. Female Speckle-Throats are slightly smaller than males and lack a head crest. However, they are swifter and more agile and prefer to hunt in small groups in order to take down prey.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Unlike most of the other Posluga (dragons that serve the hated High Family in the Mountains of Elgar), Hestia is kind and thoughtful of others. Though many dragons despise her simply for being a Posluga, Hestia's warm nature makes it difficult for those who know her to dislike her. As a hatchling, Hestia was cared for by the human girl named Flight, who, despite knowing that someday the leader of the High Family (Chaos) might take Hestia away, could not turn her back on the young dragon. As a hatchling, Hestia was close with the Morning Glory Drake named Rineli. Though her friendship with a dragon outside the Posluga or High Family was forbidden upon her entrance into the "higher order", Hestia has secretly remained a close friend to Rineli. Through Rineli, Hestia also remains in contact with Flight. It is her information on the conquest for the High Family to control all of Elgar that strengthens Flight's resolve to keep fighting against Chaos. Hestia is the hearth in the Posluga.
