Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Jaik fancies himself a famous explorer, and often boasts about the marvelous sights he has seen during his travels. While his stories impress anyone who hears them, no one ever believes him as he never has any proof. His sense of direction is incredibly poor. Not only are his shortcuts never short, but he can rarely find the same place twice, which is the reason he has chosen to live the simple life of a nomad.

Occasionally Jaik does stumble across villages and towns from previous travels years before, to find that the citizens not only recognize him but are more than willing to hear one of his fantastic tales of adventure. But without a map or journal of his discoveries, he will never be anything more than an eccentric traveler with a wild imagination and a flair for danger.
