Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Midnight Screams streaked across the open plains. The breeze was warm and his fins on his back where changing to keep himself cool. He let out a low hiss and growled softly at another approaching shape. The smaller dragon took Midnight Screams warning and changed his course for another direction. Midnight Screams flicked his tongue out seeing yet another shape coming near him but this time he raised his fins and let out a clicking noise. The dragon approached. It was one of his kind only female. He fanned out his fins showing the deep purple color. The female came over to watch. Next he pranced around rippling his fins so it looked like an ocean of darkness. She came up and rubbed her nose against his and together they walked away into the night.
