Pumpkin Dragons are a very small breed, named after their affinity for pumpkins. They are always found living inside hollowed-out pumpkins, and are only seen during the harvest season. Young children often hollow out and decorate their pumpkins in the hope that a Pumpkin Dragon will make it his or her home.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Pygmy dragons are the smallest category of dragons, being on the same scale as domesticated animals. They are often found around concentrated populations of dragons, relying on their larger brethren to ward away potential predators and leave scraps. As such, the majority of a pygmy’s diet is scavenged. Due to their tiny size, pygmies do not breed with larger varieties of dragons.

Jack Fain is a rather docile dragon, avoiding confrontation whenever possible and only really talking to Sammi Lawrence, who he thinks is one of the few other dragons that appreciates the quiet. It's kind of ironic, considering both of them are aspiring musicians, and thus get very little quiet at all  but the friendship works nonetheless.

While Susie and Alice know how to dance and sing, Jack is the lyricist for their songs, and thus spends more time with Sammi than any other dragon of their musical crew  accordingly, Sammi acts surprisingly gentle towards Jack, compared to his scolding tone towards everyone else.

Maybe their friendship is what keeps Jack at Sammi's side, even through Sammi's slow descent into madness; Susie has no doubt that Jack's loyalty will get him into trouble one day, and Jack seems oblivious to the changes in his best friend.
