Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It occasionally shoots small puffs of smoke from its nose, like it’s trying to breathe fire.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Dawn's Little Blaze is one of Phoenix's dragons. He is a disobedient, cocky hatchling with an attitude that could use an adjustment or two; most dragons would (accurately) call him a smart-alec. Nonetheless, he makes a good playmate for the other hatchlings, though he tends to influence them the wrong way. Blaze is also something of a bull in the China shop, being clumsy in both physical and social encounters. Unfortunately, he doesn't really care.

Although Blaze is only a hatchling, he has already begun to learn to breathe fire. He can barely hack out anything more than a few sparks, but nonetheless this is something Phoenix constantly worries about. The majority of her mundane but necessary possessions are highly flammable, and she takes extra precautions to keep Blaze from causing any unfortunate accidents.
