Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Jack hatched on a cool summer night and was instantly bewitched by the starry sky outside his cave. He took to hanging around with a flight of nebula dragons, pestering them until they told him everything they knew about space, but was barred from their company when it was discovered that he'd been meeting with the Space Chickens in secret. While his own wings couldn't take him to the stars, he found that words served almost as well, and composed a series of epics to dramatize his most burning questions about the cosmos. Though his dealings with the chickens damaged his academic reputation, his stories spread fast, becoming almost as well-beloved as those of the legendary Nightwing Thuwed. Jack's whereabouts today are unknown; some say he quests for knowledge, for immortality, or for the elusive Nightwing himself, while others whisper that perhaps he finally achieved his lifelong dream of traveling to the stars.
