Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

After an accident that resulted in the removal of his tongue, the little gray hatchling is named Kenebta to make up for his loss. Kenebta is a playful hatchling even if he can no longer speak. He communicates by signals and has a stronger telepathic field than usual. His silence tends to make some creatures wary but soon they accept him and seem not to notice his scarred mouth or his muteness. Kenebta tends to use signals more and will bob his head up and down, jump, or clap his paws if he is pleased but will lash his tail if he is displeased. He views the Soulpeace dragoness Mymble as his foster mother.
