Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Fin Finn Finesse. A vain dragon who thinks his fins are the best of any dragon's. The other dragons don't agree with him on that. To their way of thinking 'his fins aren't all that'. When he raises his fins it makes him appear larger then he is. This makes him stand out during battles. If only he'd keep his fins down, maybe he wouldn't be the target of every dragon's attack. But instead he holds his fins high and proud, erected for all to see. Thus unintentionally making himself a target and a distraction to the benefit of his whole clan during battles. Fin Finn, the pennant, a distraction and a target in battle. He is valued by his clan. They wouldn't be without him if they could.
