Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

As a young hatchling, Rosecant wanted to become a medic. The traumatic lashing clan healer Vysilk received shortly after her vines grew out quickly proved that profession was out of the question. Scolded for trying to satisfy both her desire to hit other dragons and her desire to help patch them up afterward, Rose withdrew from clan society. She now sits in a little cage the clan human Kad set up for her, unable to do either.
