Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It seems to bear some semblance to a horse.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

An intrepid explorer once came across Haymem while the hatchling was sleeping and managed to capture him. Mistaking the small dragon for a winged horse, the explorer used arcane sleeping powder to keep him asleep while loading him onto a wagon and transporting him to a stable.

When Haymem finally awoke, chaos reigned. The young dragon wasted no time in tearing apart the stable, destroying the corrals around it, and flying off. In his destructive rampage, the hatchling kicked a board into the intrepid explorer's head so hard that when awakened, the explorer had no memory of what happened and had trouble speaking. "What mayhem happened here" became "Wh haymem appeared"—thus the hatchling received his name.
