Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

It's quite obvious why this dragon has chosen to become a loner, staying in the confines of humid forests. Cheddar was reared by an unknown human witch in a mountain village, but was forced to flee when raiders destroyed his home and his owner. He doesn't mind the loneliness, not when he can watch the bats that dwell in his home cave drawing patterns in the air before returning to their nests.
