Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

Tomao Cloud Of Drakes was separated from her large family by a magic storm that also stopped her growth. When it happened she held onto the relative that happened to sit closest, thereby shielding the other hatchling from the worst force of the spell and saving her life. Ugilj and Tomao now see themselves as sisters (although they're just very remotely related) and chatter to each other in a language they made up. For instance, 'Tomao' means 'Large Flower' and 'Ugilj' means 'Little Bird'. Which is a little strange because Tomao is actually the younger one of the two, but that's what they chose to name themselves.
