Ice Dragons are fierce predators who hunt using their extremely cold breath. The breath of an ice dragon can freeze its prey solid in seconds. The body of an ice dragon is so cold that icicles will form along its skin no matter the outside temperature.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

The eggs of Nutaaq, Bourkan, and Rai Nuria were found frozen together. The young girl Ember, upon finding and trying in vain to free them, took them to her home in the tallest mountain of Elgar. Even when the three dragons had hatched they were always together; relying on each other.  Bourkan was the strong, fiery creature; Rai, the wise, brave one; and Nutaaq, the peacemaker and "rock" of the trio. One day they were out exploring the forest; Rai rattling off the names of the trees around them, Bourkan burning the trees around them, and Nutaaq trying to stop the spreading fires that Bourkan was causing. Suddenly Rai came to a halt, his list of names ceasing. He bent down and picked up a triangle-shaped medal, with one side of it covered in lightning bolts, one side with ice, the third with lava, and in the center an egg glowing mysteriously. They brought it to Taika,a Magi dragon, who grinned impishly and said that it revealed their future. Ever the trickster, she would reveal no more.
