This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Shadow is a vampire hatchling that almost died as the senior group of vampires did not tolerate her unnatural ability to melt into shadows and teleport, so her owner was forced to freeze her in order to save her. She was so named because as an egg, when she was bitten, a shadow walker had accidentally knocked her down a cliff. She had somehow survived by teleporting the egg and ending up in the frozen hatchling's den, where she hatched before she was ready. She is a calm dragon and, strangely enough, the sight of blood makes her run away and hide behind Em, the main dragon of their den. Shadow's one wish is that she could fly, and not just be deserted as soon as someone sees her.
