Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Like his rival, Shindou Hikaru is also named after one of Firerubynat's favourite Go players. As befitting a dragon of the night, he usually starts his daily routine after dusk, training his physical self and practicing his magic abilities for three to four hours before hunting until dawn breaks. Shindou views Toya Akira as his rival, and as such engages the white dragon in a evening of games on a daily basis; their traditional telepathic shouting matches are now legendary among the other dragons (and also the cause of many a headache). Luckily for them, his mate Rai-hime has successfully convinced him to move their meeting spot, and the two eternal rivals now play far enough away for their end-of-evening customs to only resemble a mere whisper in the distance.
