Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Like most of his kind, Vaclav is a loner. He disappears from the cave as soon as darkness falls and returns just before the sky begins to lighten. If he is encountered by an early riser during one of these coming and goings, at most he acknowledges it with a curt nod. He avoids the other nighttime dragons, voicing contempt for the airiness of dragons such as Nebulas, Royal Blues, and Moonstones; scorn for the diminutive size of the Night Glories; and being just plain rude to Sunsets, Blacks, and Nocturnes. Even those of his own species are unwelcome, as he prefers to hunt alone. All this comes from deep insecurity and social awkwardness. He has never known how others expect him to behave, and because of this avoids them. He gets lonely often, but doesn't know how to approach other dragons. This inability to communicate will occasionally make him angry. He is desperately in love with Alia Skysong, but they have had very few interactions, and  he is afraid to tell her of his feelings.
