Guardian Dragons have large shields on the end of their tails. Although the shields appear to be heavy, they are light, yet nearly unbreakable. Guardian Dragons use their tail-shields, as well as their wings, to deflect attacks and protect others. Often, they will guard the eggs and hatchlings of a nest while others are away. They are generally peaceful, and will not retaliate unless necessary. They have no need to forage or hunt, as they are fed by those they protect.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

At first, Adalward considered himself a guardian dragon with nobody to guard. Odhran guarded the eggs, Angel guarded the hatchlings and Odhran, and Raiquen guarded Angel. He was depressed and would often go off alone and sulk. This all changed when Angana, once again, got in trouble, this time challenging a much older and more experienced wild black dragon. Adalward saw Angana slinking off that morning and decided to follow her. He saw her challenge the black and knew that he couldn't interfere with a challenge that she initiated. He could, however, interfere with the other wild dragons that Angana didn't know were sneaking up behind her, wanting to finish off both combatants as they battled. Adalward threw himself on the other dragons, shielding himself from their attacks. Angana and the black heard the commotion and turned from their fight to drive off the other dragons. Adalward left the battle scarred, but with the knowledge that he could always find someone to protect.
