And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Every year, eight little Halloween hatchlings go trick-or-treating at various human towns and villages. Spedkezek is the most disliked of the eight, both because of his powers and his delight in using them. Luckily for everyone, he's a hatchling with a hatchling's wants, so most of what he does centers around getting more candy. Spedkezek never wears a costume, believing it to be wasted effort when he can just use his mind-control powers to get all the candy he wants.
