Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Lord Ebonscale is Lady Pelargonium's mate and the undisputed ruler of Flowernest Weyr—or so he thinks.  Lady Pelargonium is perfectly willing to let him think this—it gives her more time to manage the day-to-day tasks that keep Flowernest running, and besides, if there ever were a serious threat, they'd need Lord Ebonscale's battle magic to defend the weyr.  Lord Ebonscale is a good leader for the most part—he's kind, just, and absolutely devoted to the safety of the weyr.  His major failing is that he doesn't like to bother with all of the little details that keep a weyr thriving, and so he is pleased when small problems (seemingly) resolve themselves.  Lord Ebonscale feels that his efforts are better suited to grand endeavors, such as driving off potential invaders and leading the hunting that feeds Flowernest Weyr.
