Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys swimming in a nearby pond.

And look! Its fins and tail have gotten bigger, and you’ve moved it to a larger body of water to swim in. It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Peaceful and quiet, the caves lie in silence. The morning passes with little noise, the residents all lazing about and enjoying a very sweet existence. That is, until a cry erupted from the cave owned by a rather newbish and still easily angered girl. Several pygmies fled out from the opening along with the canopies and whiptails, all screeching in alarm.

Passersby peered into the cave, wondering what could have startled the creatures so. Other dragons clung to the walls in surprise, not daring to see what caused the commotion. At the heart of it all was the cave's owner, forehead planted onto a desk with scrolls spread across it and a small water dragon in a puddle next to it. Those who got close enough could hear the girl muttering, "Darn water dragons," Followed by, "GENDER GIRL FOR ONCE, DARN YOU!"

Poor little, sensible, Watem will never know the true reason as to why he was frozen as a hatchling.
