Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Amber Tinsel is a young Tinsel dragon. Unlike all of the other dragons in her clan, she is rarely found in her clan's cave, and is most of the time found at her owner's coffee shop in Drakeville, a nearby town where both dragons and humans live, not far from her clan's cave and her owner's cottage. The other dragons find it a little strange that she chooses to spend most of her time there, surrounded by humans, instead of with other dragons. She tells them she would rather be around humans. She can't communicate with humans verbally, but can write messages down. She is intelligent, kind of quiet, and loves coffee. She is also more "urbanized" than the rest of her clan, as she has spent more of her life with humans and other dragons from Drakeville.
