Nebula Dragons are nocturnal creatures. With the best eyesight to be found, they are often seen staring into space. Each dragon tends to observe a particular nebula and will eventually change their colors and patterns to match it. As the nebula changes over time, the dragon changes with it. The more intricate the design of the nebula, the better chance an individual has of attracting a mate. It is said that the markings on no two Nebula Dragons will be exactly the same.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Eleniel is the daughter of Estrea (daughter of Orion) and Scorpio (son of Starlorne) and is the eldest of her siblings. She was raised by a beginning Keeper who would later become her Bond and a Rider, as well as Afeare's boyfriend. His name was Asch. Her adopted clutch was a rather violent one, consisting of herself, a Vampire dragon, a Hellfire wyvern, and an all-too-easily-provoked Black dragon. Despite her rough upbringing, however, Eleniel developed a calm, relatively peaceful nature. Her ability to defend herself, though, as well as her close connection with Asch, is part of what earned Asch his place among the Riders. She spends much of her free time overlooking the Ceren Nesting Grounds, and though she is not yet mated, she had bred with other dragons multiple times in an attempt to increase the Nebula population at Ceren, though only one of her children is a Nebula dragon.
