Stone Dragons have a tough outer covering made of a stone-like material. They eat rocks, using the minerals they contain for nourishment and to keep up their stone outer shell. They rarely move, and are the heaviest of all types of dragons. Although they have wings, indicating flight ability, no one has ever seen a stone dragon flying.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Granitefoot is like his family group's guard dog. Raised from an abandoned egg by Goldpool, he felt that he was eternally indebted to her and her family, and thus stayed on with them, guarding their cave. Most strangers, upon seeing him, would have mistaken him for a mound of rocks, until he rose up and pounced on them.

Granitefoot has a secret affection for Rainscales, as she does for him. However they want to keep it secret from the other dragons, for fear that they might disapprove, as Granitefoot is the guardian of their cave. Rainscales took their children to Goldpool and lied that she had found them in the forest and begged to be allowed to care for them as her own. Now Granitefoot can watch over his children day by day, something he feared might never happen at first.

Granitefoot has also never had much time for any hobbies, as guarding the cave is a full-time job, but apart from secretly meeting Rainscales, he spends particularly boring days searching for tasty rocks.
